Forensic Exams (SANE Exams)

What to expect from a SANE exam—and how we support you.

After a rape, you have the right to have a forensic exam, or “rape kit”, at no cost to you. If a hospital or doctor sends you a bill for this exam, we can help you in trying to have that debt erased.

What Is a SANE Exam?

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) exam is a specialized medical-forensic exam offered to individuals who have experienced sexual violence. It includes medical care, evidence collection (if desired), and access to preventative treatment for STIs or pregnancy. The exam is always free—and completely your choice.

You do not have to report to law enforcement to receive a SANE exam. Our team is here to support your healing, whether or not you choose to involve the police.

What to Expect

Our trained nurses and advocates are here to walk with you through every step. You are in control at all times—you can pause, skip, or stop the exam whenever you want.

There are two types of SANE exams:

  • Acute Exam: Performed within 120 hours (5 days) of the assault
  • Non-Acute Exam: Performed any time after the assault—weeks, months, even years later

A typical SANE exam may include:

  • A physical exam to check for injuries
  • Collection of forensic evidence (only with your consent)
  • Photographs to document physical trauma (only with your consent)
  • Supportive care including medication to prevent STIs or pregnancy
  • Referrals to therapy and advocacy services

You may bring someone with you if that feels safe. You can also ask for a support advocate to stay by your side.

Important Tips Before the Exam

If possible, try to avoid the following before your exam to help preserve evidence:

  • Bathing or showering
  • Using the toilet
  • Brushing teeth or hair
  • Changing clothes

But if you’ve already done any of these—don’t worry. You can still receive care and support.

After the Exam

You’ll receive:

  • Information about follow-up care
  • Referrals for therapy and legal support (if wanted)
  • Emergency contraception and HIV prevention medication, if needed
  • A private space to change, clean up, and rest

We’ll also connect you to one of our advocates for emotional support and help navigating next steps.

Your Privacy Matters

Everything you share during a SANE exam is confidential. If you choose to report the assault later, the evidence can be stored until you're ready.

We will never pressure you to report, and nothing will be shared with law enforcement unless you choose it.
