Empowering Survivors: EVAWI’s “Seek Then Speak” Program

What Is Seek Then Speak?

“Seek Then Speak” is a trauma-informed, web-based platform developed by the End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI). It offers survivors of sexual assault—and their supporters—a confidential, self-paced way to explore options, access accurate information, and initiate the reporting process on their own terms.

SEEK: An informational hub where survivors and supporters can privately learn about topics such as victim rights, medical/forensic exams, advocacy, and the reporting process—covering real-world concerns like costs, grammar of bringing support people, and more.

SPEAK: A self-guided online interview that allows survivors to document their assault through a secure questionnaire. Once completed, the platform generates a downloadable PDF that can be emailed, printed, or shared with law enforcement or support providers.

How It Works

  1. Information on Your Terms (SEEK)
  • Private, online access—no need to speak with anyone unless you choose to.
  • Topics include crime victim rights, advocacy support, medical exam processes, and law enforcement reporting.
  • Offers tips for support persons, including how to help survivors in trauma-informed ways.

2. Begin Reporting When You’re Ready (SPEAK)

  • A step-by-step guided questionnaire helps survivors record details of the assault.
  • FAQs during the process explain why questions are asked, how the info is used, and survivors' rights—promoting accuracy and reducing anxiety.
  • At the end, a PDF report is generated for survivors to keep, print, email, or share. No data is stored within the system after the report is generated.

3. Increased Accessibility & Privacy

  • Available in 100+ languages via browser-based translation, with English questions and multilingual responses.
  • Fully usable on computers, tablets, smartphones, and is screen-reader accessible for users with disabilities.
  • Survivors can complete initial steps from home—or any safe space—without time pressures or forced interaction.

Why It Matters

  • More than 80% of survivors never report sexual assault—often due to fears of disbelief or trauma from the justice system.
  • Seek Then Speak provides a new pathway, allowing survivors to take control of timing and process, empowering them with privacy and readiness.
  • The self-report mechanism supports survivors emotionally, fostering preparedness and trust before potential law enforcement interaction.

How You Can Engage & Spread Awareness

1. Direct User Access

2. Professional Resources & Integration

3. Community-Based Initiatives

  • Some jurisdictions, like Washington State and Seattle, host site-specific implementations with local referral links and instructions.
  • Agencies can embed the platform on their own websites, train staff through on-demand modules, and track community engagement.
