What to Expect from a Forensic Exam (SANE Exam)
A compassionate guide to help you understand the process—at your pace, on your terms.
After a sexual assault, your body may feel like unfamiliar territory. The idea of undergoing a forensic exam—often called a SANE exam—can feel overwhelming or even frightening. At Christina’s Courage, we understand. And we want you to know: you are in control every step of the way.
This post is designed to gently walk you through what happens during a forensic exam so that, if and when you're ready, you can make an informed decision that feels right for you.
💡 What Is a SANE Exam?
A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) exam is a medical-forensic examination provided by a specially trained nurse. It is designed to:
- Address your medical needs (like injuries, infections, or pregnancy prevention)
- Collect forensic evidence (only if you consent)
- Connect you with support services like therapy or legal aid
You do not have to report the assault to law enforcement to receive a SANE exam. You can have the exam and take time to decide what you want to do next.
🕒 When Can You Get an Exam?
- Acute SANE exams are typically offered within 120 hours (5 days) of the assault
- Non-acute exams can be performed weeks, months, or even years later for documentation and care
If you're unsure whether it's "too late," please know: it's never too late to seek care.
🧭 What to Expect — Step by Step
1. Arrival and Support
You'll be greeted by a trauma-informed advocate or nurse who will explain your options and rights. You're never alone—we'll walk through everything with you.
You can bring someone you trust to be with you—or ask for one of our advocates to stay by your side.
2. Consent and Control
Before anything begins, you'll be asked for informed consent. This means everything will be explained to you in advance, and you'll decide which parts (if any) you’re comfortable with.
- You can say no to any part of the exam
- You can pause or stop at any time
- You will never be forced or pressured to participate
3. Medical Exam
The nurse will check for any injuries, answer your medical questions, and offer care such as:
- Emergency contraception
- HIV prevention (PEP)
- Testing and treatment for STIs
4. Evidence Collection (Optional)
If you choose, the nurse may collect forensic evidence (often called a “rape kit”), which may include:
- Swabs from certain parts of your body
- Documentation of injuries (with your permission)
- Clothing or personal items placed in evidence bags
- Hair or nail samples
- Blood or urine samples (optional)
Again: only the parts you consent to will be performed.
5. Aftercare and Support
Once the exam is complete, you’ll be given:
- Clean clothes if yours were collected
- A quiet space to rest
- Referrals to counseling, legal advocacy, or medical follow-up
- Information about your next steps—if and when you're ready
You do not have to make any decisions right away. Evidence can often be stored anonymously if you’re unsure about reporting.
What to Bring (If You Can)
If you're planning to have an exam, try to bring:
- A change of clothes (if you’re comfortable with your current ones being collected)
- Any items from the scene (in a paper bag if possible—not plastic)
- A trusted support person (optional)
But if you don’t have these, it’s okay. Just come as you are. We’ll take care of the rest.
Common Fears & Truths
“Will it hurt?”
The exam should not be painful. Everything is done gently, and you're in control the entire time.
“Will I be judged?”
Absolutely not. Our nurses and advocates are here to support, not question or blame.
“Is this only for women?”
No. SANE exams are available to survivors of any gender identity or expression, starting at age 11.
“What if I already showered?”
You can still get an exam. Evidence may still be collected, and your health still matters.
You Deserve Care—Without Conditions
You don’t have to know what comes next. You don’t need a report, a plan, or a perfect story. If you’re hurting, confused, or just not sure—you are still worthy of care.
